Goal Sports 1 v 1 Scalby Under 10's
Keir Smith trys his luck from distance for Goal Sports
Goal Sports played their second match of the day which was an 11 a side thriller for the Goal Sports fans. The boys did everything but win the game as they rattled the woodwork no fewer than 4 times!!. A fantastic delivery from Keir Smith saw Laurence McGregor tower the highest in the box to finish a corner in the 9th minute. Alex Ferguson once said Charlie Adam's corners were worth 15 million alone, if that’s the case then what are Keir Smiths worth!!. The Goal Sports boys were firmly on top as they came forward in waves looking to score further goals. Adam Naylor was impressing with his movement upfront and he drew countless saves from the Scalby keeper in the first half - and was very unlucky not to score. Naylor really was having no luck as he finally managed to strike the ball past the goalie and just as he was about to wheel away in celebration a defender hacked it off the line!!
The Goal Sports defence were performing expertly as they won the ball back time
and time again. Alistair McGregor and Matthew Jenkins were solid as a rock as
they broke up attacks by stepping out of defence without even having to make a
tackle. Jenkins was almost rewarded as he thundered a shot that came back off
the crossbar on 16 minutes, a shot that would have been contender for goal of
the season!. Harvey Iveson fired just wide and Keir Smith had a good effort
saved as the Goal Sports boys came in for the half time team talk with their
goalie; Ben Hawkes pointing out he hadn't touched the ball so far!!
The second half continued the same way the first finished as Naylor quickly brought another fantastic save from the Scalby keeper - as he proved a real obstacle to get around, and didn’t Naylor know it. The save had left the Scalby stopper on the deck and Smith collected the loose ball 20 yards out and tried the lob. The ball looked certain to go in and give Goal Sports a greater lead when a Scalby defender raced back on to his line and saved the day as he headed clear. Top defending as Smith shared Naylor’s frustrations in the goal getting stakes.
The crowd were being treated to some great passing football as the Goal Sports boys not only worked hard to win the ball back when they didn’t have it, but looked like they could create a chance at any opportunity. Regan Dove was next to go close to doubling the lead as well as further efforts from Naylor and the youngest outfield player; Jake Rider. The
shot count had ticked well into double figures as the games turning point came
about 4 minutes from time.
Referee Alex Wells had halted play for treatment of a Scalby defender and the game was restarted with a drop ball. The Scalby defendershowed great sportsmanship as he returned the ball to Goal Sports – who previously held possession before the stoppage.
As the ball hurtled towards Jenkins in the Goal Sports back line the Scalby forwards gave chase, not allowing Jenkins any time to regain possession of the football. Jenkins looked
to clear as a Scalby player nicked the ball from him and raced through one on one. Finally Hawkes got his wish – some action! Out came the Goal Sports Number 1 but he could do nothing about the finish that was about to fly past him and the score somehow changed to one all - much to the Goal Sports boys annoyance at the lack of fair play!
Credit must go to the Allotment Lane based Goal Sports boys as the setback didn’t show any sign of slowing down their attacking flair as yet again Adam Naylor was denied by magical goalkeeping. From the resulting Smith corner a deflection saw the ball flick off the post with half the crowd thinking it had gone in!
In the final minute Keir Smith thought he had won it as he hit Scalby’s 12th man – the woodwork! Smith’s shot cannoning off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
A fabulous team performance against a Scalby team who did the double in the Scaborough Under 10’s league last year winning the League and Cup - and only losing two games.
Goals; Laurence McGregor
Man of the Match; Alistair McGregor;
Alistair showed unbelievable composure on the ball for a centre back as he adapted perfectly to his new role. The way he stepped forward out of the defence to intercept through balls was Rio Ferdinhand like! It must be said that the whole Goal Sports team
put on a top display – one which was easily their best of the season!
