Goal Sports – 8
Walker (3), Johnson (2), Botterill (2), Schuller
Mark Barber Soccer School – 1
The Goal Sports boys came up against their Scarborough opponents for their first match of the year and impressed throughout.
Goal Sports went one up after only two minutes as Callum Schuller whipped in a corner that evaded everyone, including the keeper and flew in to the back of the net.
Two minutes later the home side doubled their lead as Josh Walker smashed home a thunderbolt of a strike.
The midfield 3 of Riley Wilson, Ewan Johnson and Schuller were pulling the strings in the centre, giving great service to the forwards and wide men. It was one of the later as James Staff provided a great pull back from the left hand side for Walker to net his second of the game after 6 minutes.
Jake Pinkney and Tom Bradley formed an early understanding as both boys excelled throughout the game as a centre back pair. Ewan was the next to test the away side’s goal as he drew a fantastic save from the keeper from close range after a corner. It didn’t take him long to get on the score sheet though as he finished well minutes later to take the score to 4-0, and that was the way it stayed until the end of the first period.
Harvery Botterill, Eddie Oliver, Sam Staveley and the impressive Owen Andrews were all introduced at the break and they carried on where the first period team left off.
Two minutes in Josh Walker completed his hatrick and a sterling performance as he powered home once again off the crossbar.
Eddie and Owen provided great width in this period, supporting the forwards well and defending with great discipline when required.
After several chances and great saves from the away keeper the half ended with the away side pulling one back to make the score 5-1 at the 2nd break.
The final period saw more changes with most boys having played in two different positions by the end of the game.
One player who led the line extremely well, showing neat touches, clever turns and after 5 minutes of the 3rd period an unbelievable goal. From almost on the left hand byline Harvey Botterill somehow managed to fire the ball home over the keeper and leave him with absolutely no chance. An unbelievable finish!
Riley Overfield and Owen were now pulling the strings in the attacking midfield role, creating numerous chances with some fine dribbling and team work. Harvey profited again from some crisp passing and finished well from close range to bag his second of the match.
Jack Oakley in the Goal Sports goal may have found himself with little saving action but his kicking and overall distribution when he had the ball was excellent, although he found himself a little nervous when almost lobbed from 30 yards J
James Staff may have dropped in to the back line but that didn’t stop him showing some great footwork and dribbling as he danced past 3 players after winning the ball on half way and showing great composure to pick out key passes when needed all game.
The final goal manage to eclipse the 7 before it as Ewan Johnson picked the ball up 20 yards out and let rip with an absolute worldie of a strike which almost took out the right hand corner of the net!
Managers Corner – We have put on 6 years worth of Goal Sports matches now and this for me was easily the most pleasing of the lot. The way the boys moved the ball at speed and supported each other was an absolute joy to watch for me as a coach.
It was great to see so many boys having the confidence to get the ball down and run with it, committing players on the other team and generally being positive in possession.
The defenders also were superb, always tracking back and helping each other out and starting attacks with passes rather than clearances up field which was their instructions pre match.
Man of the Match; - Callum Schuller
This was a really close call as there were so many excellent performances from the defence to the forward line but Schullsy’s all action performance in the middle just nicked the award. It was a Yaya Toure like display by the Driffield Junior in the middle as he constantly broke up play and kept the ball well for his side.
